Journal Announcements / Re: "L.A. Thru a Lens"
« on: May 05, 2013, 11:09:58 PM »
Thanks Col! Yes, there are many good books on the Gean Tree Press shelves now. I've read through them all and they are superb. You'll know the names as soon as you see them (mostly well known poets). Enjoy!!! Oh, and if you have a second, send your friends the links as well. The more the happier!

Journal Announcements / "L.A. Thru a Lens"
« on: April 20, 2013, 12:51:57 AM »
Recently, Col completed an online book of my haiga which can be found at the following link. While I provided the haiga, he worked his magic as to the order in which they should be presented; and, did an amazing job. Linda Papanicolaou wrote the afterword providing much insight as to her reaction to the book in general (very in tune).
Looking forward to your thoughts and responses.

Aubrie,
From a poet point of view, I agree with you completely. You have a wonderful poem. I meant no disrespect.
However, from a philosophical point of view ... for me ... I would think in terms of "all the things I am" ... nothing against the poem at all; just a different perspective (of which both are your poem or at least, what your poem stimulates the mind to ponder).
Blessings...

I prefer the first:
winter stars –
the darkness between
my dreams
However, I also prefer the use of a cut-marker after L1. And, as a side note, winter stars equals night. Therefore its use causes a redundancy with "darkness" in line 2. Gabi points this out as well.
By working with L1 a bit more, you can encourage a stronger poem and one that doesn't include the redundancy. Her suggestion, "snowed in" is wonderful. But, I'm sure you have a few excellent ideas as well.
Good luck with this one.

In-Depth Haiku: Free Discussion Area / Re: Do you think future haiku artists will be more accepting of personification?
« on: February 17, 2013, 11:26:25 PM »
Thanks for your posts, Gabi! Always appreciate seeing you pop in!
Personification is normal in haiku/hokku of which, as Gabi points out, was used frequently by Basho (and others). I think one of the best ways to see what has been used in the past is to read a lot ... a lot a lot! Reading the old masters besides the new ones of today is important. The experience gives tremendous support you a poet's knowledge base of what was used and/or not.
So many folks teach. So many of them have not read enough. That's how misconceptions come about as to what is acceptable or not regarding older Japanese poetry styles.

No, unfortunately. It's probably less socially relevant today than it was in the 60s. It doesn't have focus; and things without focus most often end up irrelevant. JMHO Give it more time though; there is a chance of recovery as the years go by. We'll see. We need a broader audience besides ourselves - regardless of haiku style. That's why I wrote Haiku Wisdom the way I did ... mixing kung fu (and life) philosophy with haiku delivery. It's for a broader audience that is generally "out of the haiku loop".
