New to Haiku: Free Discussion Area / Re: previously published material -
« on: December 18, 2010, 08:35:19 PM »
Chibi, thank you for your detailed reply but I am still not clear, perhaps my question lacked clarity, sorry. - if submissions are accepted for an anthology, a magazine or a book, clearly they are published.
However if submissions are requested and accepted to be hung on display in local public gallery or event, with each haiku poets bio several of their haiku - is it actually the same thing as being published ? Can we quote it as a publication ?

thank you for sharing your thoughts everyone
cat your reply prompts a question, can we consciously engineer layers when composing the haiku or do they happen as a by product while we create and play with the concept ?
Bea, hugs, not silly at all - me too.
Chibi, I imagine our response to any haiku to be very individual, depending on our temperament, mood, abilities, and experience.
Laura, yes getting lots of feedback us very helpful, giving feedback is too, I find it's possible to learn a lot while doing so.
Alan, thank you for the link, and the insight into the judging process, your passion for haiku is infectious.

I am realising how valuable it is to slow down and take time to absorb all that another's haiku offers, reading again and again thoughtfully before jumping in with comments. My mind tends to work at speed, but slowing down, with practise I am hoping this will make my comments more in tune and relevant to the authors intentions, and the spin off is that I learn more about haiku in the process.

I think the clue to your frustration lies in this statement
Actually this is a useful checklist to look at before sending english haiku to japan or china, thankyou.
Could we design an english equivalent to their pauses?

Let me outline some elements of Japanese haiku that I feel failed to be transported with the same importance held in Japan:While I agree a lot fail in this respect it doesn't mean its not possible, perhaps it would be more fruitful to promote the use of what you describe ?

Hi Laura, lovely haiku. I tried to post a fib ku but like to see them centered and couldn't work out how to do it. Fibonacci are fun to do but take patience.

17 syllables might not be 5-7-5 it could be 1235321, a fibonacci haiku

, I can appreciate both sides here. We are a part of nature and I love the zen aspect and tradition within haiku; it's in our nature as a part of nature to evolve, have a sense of humour and to be innovative - yet somehow haiku seems to have become overly serious and if humour and true innovation breaks through even in innovative haiku we feel like we are breaking the rules, disturbing something sacred. It would be a shame to divide rather than accommodate, co-operation should be possible, instead we have different factions ( like religion ) each convinced they are right, we should remember we are all a part of the same inter-related whole diverse fullness of creation, without elasticity under pressure things have a habit of falling apart. In Japan they invite contributions from other languages, first try I got an hon mention for an entry to the mainichi haiku contest, we appreciate the gift of haiku from them and it seems they appreciate our take on it. Perhaps what we need is more flexibility and to embrace all that haiku is as it evolves.

: traditional, contemporary and innovative Haiku. i would appreciate a really clear definition of these three please. I like to write fibonacci poems and it is possible to do a mini fibonacci ku in 17 syllables and fibonacci numbers

5

1........total 17 syllables
which of the three might this fit traditional as it could be seventeen syllables and have two parts fragment and body, even a season word, or would it fit in contemporary, or innovative ?
