Today’s Book of the Week, Coasting Through the Puddles, is a collection of haiku about childhood by Robert Major. It won a Virgil Hutton Haiku Chapbook Contest Winner for 2001-2002. Major had a rare ability to write haiku that consistently evoke scenes that take us back to our own childhood and remind us over and over again of the wonder, tenderness, simplicity and enjoyment of that time of life.
Atop the seawallchildren wave at their shadows . . .the shadows wave back
As the freight passeschild and the engineer wave —each wending homeward
The boys pitch their tentten steps from the kitchen door . . .first time camping out
