Juxtapositions, The Haiku Foundation’s journal of haiku research and scholarship, announces the release of Juxtapositions 4.1. Articles include:

  • “The Pig and the Boar” by Clayton Beach, an investigation into the limits to brevity and simplicity in haiku
  • “Sonia Sanchez’s ‘magic/now’” by Meta L. Schettler, which explores the eclectic approach to haiku taken by one of this generation’s most renowned poets and cultural figures
  • “The Postdomestic Woman in Roberta Beary’s The Unworn Necklace” by Joshua Gage, wherein the author explores the way in which women who have experienced divorce express themselves in film, art, and now, haiku
  • “Texts Within Texts”, by Richard Tice, which considers the underlying texts within a text being read and the relationship between them, a process particularly rich in haiku
  • “Matter and Method: Emerson, Haiku, and the Way of Zen” by Donald Eulert, which takes as its departure point the journals of Ralph Waldo Emerson and explores them for ‘haiku’ sensibility

It also contains reviews of East-West Literary Imagination: Cultural Exchanges from Yeats to Morrison, edited by Yoshinobu Hakutani (Columbia MO: University of Missouri Press, 2017. ISBN 9780826273949), reviewed by Tiffany Austin; African American Haiku: Cultural Visions, edited by John Zheng (Jackson, MS: University Press of Mississippi. ISBN 978-1-4968-0303-0), reviewed by Joshua Gage; Poetic Spirit Through Haiku by Sonia Sanchez (New York, NY: Lexington Books. ISBN 978-1-4985-4332-3), reviewed by Joshua Gage; Haiku Before Haiku by Steven D. Carter (New York: Columbia University Press, 2011. ISBN 978-0-231-15647-9), reviewed by Michael Dylan Welch; and The River of Heaven: The Haiku of Bashō, Buson, Issa, and Shiki by Robert Aitken (Berkeley: Counterpoint, 2011. ISBN 978-1-58243-710-1), reviewed by Michael Dylan Welch; as well as eight haiga by and in tribute to the late poet and painter Marlene Mountain, with commentary by Stephen Addiss.

Juxtapositions can now be found between covers as well! These large, attractive, full-color volumes contain all the articles from their respective issues, in book form. Royalties help support The Haiku Foundation. Order them here:
