Joshua Gage’s first published haiku collection, Breaths, from 2008, is our Book of the Week. Whether they reflect his experience as a worker, city dweller, lover, family man, or poet, Gage’s haiku find the mark frequently enough to merit rereading. He softens the edges of his realistic observations with a Stoical humour and a compassion that lead us gently into reliving with him insightful moments in his many lives.
I peel the label
off my Budweiser
through the candles’ reflection
rain beneath the moon
her son asleep
breathes into my chest
