The Haiku Foundation honors the work of contemporary masters of the dual art of haiga: visual image wedded to haiku. This month’s featured artist is Marlene Mountain.
Marlene is a legend in the haiku community, but her principal artistic endeavor was painting. She earned a B.F.A. from the University of Oklahoma and M.A. from the University of North Dakota in painting with a minor in literature. Her paintings have been included in many group and one-woman exhibitions, and she taught courses in drawing and design.
This gallery centers on details from a dozen or so paintings she considered to be central to her artistic “message”.
The photo shows Marlene at the University of Oklahoma in 1962. She passed away at her beloved farm and mountain redoubt in Tennessee on March 9, 2018.
