The Haiku Foundation honors the work of contemporary masters of the dual art of haiga: visual image wedded to haiku. This month’s featured artist is Jessica Tremblay.
Jessica Tremblay is a haiku poet and accidental cartoonist. In 2007, she created Old Pond Comics to help people learn haiku through cartoons. Her hilarious comic strips feature the adventures of Master Kawazu (the frog that jumped in Basho’s pond) and his apprentice Kaeru. In 2014-2015, she received the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the B.C. Arts Council to develop her haiku-comics series. Her comics have been featured in Digitarte festival in Mexico, Golconda Stones conference in India, Geist, ricepaper magazine, Frogpond, Haiku Canada Review, and Haidan (Japan). The comics are also published in Gong (Association Francophone de Haïku), Troutswirl and on her blog. She lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
